Picture Yourself in a Car on a Highway

As far as parenting goes, I don’t believe in The Drug Talk or The Sex Talk or The Safety Talk, etc. I believe all these are an ongoing conversation where bits of information are revealed as the children ask questions (which, by the way, they begin doing as soon as they can speak). The amount and type of information that’s given needs to be on par with the level of maturity of the child who’s asking. I also don’t believe in lecturing. In my experience, this is a grandiose failure that only results in resentment and trust issues later on. Do I want my kids to feel comfortable coming to me to talk when they have something on their mind? Or do I want them to dread ever having a serious conversation with me because I’m going to talk at them instead of with them? Obviously, the former is more appealing. Continue reading
